Work hard, get it done, hustle. These are all phrases we hear all the time, but what happens when you just don’t got it? What happens when all the creative juices disappear? What happens when you feel uninspired, unmotivated, and generally down in the dumps.
What happens then?
The struggle for motivation is hard for anyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re en entrepreneur, working for the man, or skydiving for a living. There are always days we feel unmotivated. So what do you do? How do you cope?
Here’s the secret, and yes, there is a secret. But I don’t want it to be a secret anymore, which is why I’m sharing this with you today.
Let’s take a minute to step into a scenario.
The other day I was sitting in front of my computer screen, just staring at it. I didn’t know what to type, where to go, what to work on next…I felt paralyzed by overwhelm and I was completely unmotivated to do anything.
So then I did the #1 thing you’re NOT supposed to do. I turned to Facebook.
I felt so paralyzed by having too many things to do, that instead I did nothing.
What a waste.
I entered the never ending vortex of the Facespace that draws you in to play comparison games with your mind, wastes over 15 minutes of your time in what feels like a blink of an eye, and read far too many political posts that just made me angry.
So now, I’m sitting here staring at Facebook, angry, comparing myself to others AND feeling unmotivated.
Have you been here?
I was feeling negative, REALLY negative. I wasn’t accomplishing anything and I had still had a TON to do. This seemed like a lose-lose situation.
So here’s the secret, share it with your friends, because this is a good one! Here’s what I did to combat those negative emotions.
Here’s the secret to motivation…
For all those other people I was comparing myself to, for all those other people who were posting on Facebook and using up their time & energy like me, I started to comment. Now, know this for certain, these weren’t just any comments. I focused on encouraging every single person I could.
Every time I posted an encouraging comment to someone, I felt my negativity wash away. I felt clarity come back into play, I didn’t feel like I was playing the comparison game any more because I was lifting up those around me, I was making a positive impact and I was finally feeling…motivated.
My dear clever, talented and hard-working friend, I want you to know it’s that simple.
When you feel that moment of overwhelm coming on and your motivation disappearing. I encourage you to turn it around, take the focus off of yourself and start focusing on others.
Now, I don’t necessarily recommend that you do this on Facebook, it’s still a time sucker at best. But I DO recommend throwing around encouragement like confetti. I don’t care how, but let me explain the science behind it.
When you encourage others, you’re taking the focus off of yourself, your doubts, your fears, your negativity. (you, you, you). When you focus on others in a positive way, you receive positivity back! Your world now becomes a more positive place and positivity does a lot of things for your health, your mind and your motivation.
Positivity promotes clarity and energy. Positivity helps communication, it helps take away the doubts and fears we have about communicating because we’re not focused on ourselves we’re focused on helping others.
Side tip: if you struggle talking on the phone, like I sometimes do, just start encouraging the person on the other end, it helps tremendously! I instantly let go of my fear of talking on the phone, feel more confident and the best part is? They feel a whole lot better too!
You don’t have to be Pollyanna positive (unless that’s what you really want in life, I mean, let's be real...Pollyanna is awesome), but the point is when you focus on others and how to make their lives better, amazing things happen.
If you haven’t yet, you need to join me on Periscope. This entire post is actually a Periscope broadcast I did last week on the importance of encouragement. (find me @ BrightlyandCo)
Let’s be a community of people that lifts each other and supports one another.
I’m rooting for you!
